Day 17 to St Gen, Missouri (54 miles)

We didn't leave Murphysboro until gone 1pm. Really grim day cycling hungover but we made it across the Mississippi and into our 5th state (Missouri). We've changed route slightly and are heading north to take what is now called "the Katy Trail" across Northern Missouri. This was primarily to avoid crossing another mountain range (the Ozarks in Southern Missouri) as we'd heard a lot of negative things about how tough they were and how unpleasant the roads are there but also as we thought a few days riding the old Texas - Chicago railroad route along the Missouri River would be a better/easier/quicker option. Roll on Kansas!

Oh we also crossed the Mississippi at a place called Chester, Illinois today where Popeye was apparently created. There should be a few photos of us in front of Popeye statues on the slide show shortly.

Hi Joe

Keep pedalling! Can relate to you a lot at the moment. Adam has a scan this morning to find out if chemo has worked on his cancer. Fingers crossed, we get results tomorrow. We'll be doing some fundraising next year for Leukaemia Research. Read Hannah's article in the Birmingham Mail about fertility and reminded us of our own situation.

Keep going, I think you're doing something brilliant.

Lots of love, Anne Griffiths xxx

IF you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise:
If you can dream - and not make dreams your master;
If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools:

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breathe a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: 'Hold on!'

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
' Or walk with Kings - nor lose the common touch,
if neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man, my son!

KEEP GOING LADS!!!!!!!

Hi Dan, impressive job for 2 weeks riding! Those 100+ mile days must be killers, look huge on the map...

Bit concerned you're not eating enough red meat though mate; you can't be trailing in the patty counter?!? Sort it out!

Keep on pedalling and keep the updates coming, makes great reading!

is it strange that because everyone is leaving really nice messages that i feel the need to mock Joe even more? It's everything i can do whilst reading not to constantly barrage you with questions concerning how big the bum blisters are yet....but i'll give in and say that Dan sounds like a top bloke. Joe...well....i hate your face.

keep going boys.

Dan and Joe

Sending you a massive well done for your amazing pedaling power so far.

The distance mapped across the kitchen wall is hard to comprehend...you're doing brilliantly and in such hard conditions. 107 miles in a day?!!!??! - I think you definitely deserved those shandies the other night.

Thinking of you both and keep on keeping on.

Well I guess if Chinners can leave a comment while saving the Iraquis from themselves, I can do the same from my warm, cosy London office! Well done boys, you're doing fantastically well (no doubt all the spooning taking place in these "motels" each night is getting you through the pain...). More pictures of blood and sweat please. KEEP GOING! Besos, Siobhan (aka Tripod) xxx

Big guns, bet you wish that you had spent less time on the beer lifters and more time on the quads in the gym.
Epic effort guys, I've been keeping an eye on the blog in fits of jealousy while I've been sitting my exams.
Sponsorship money is forthcoming from me when I get my bursary funds in a week or so.
Big guns, I've spent this year inventing new beef based dishes for you to try next year. I can't wait.
Good luck
Hob

"Day-26, 145 Miles"

Awesome Job- New Record!! You guys are turning into machines, which probably explains the lack of updates!

And as of day 27 you can say that you 'got the hell out of Dodge' for real...
