It was a fairly uneventful day from Delta, at least as far as Grand Junction, the last major town in Colorado. I (Joe) did my now customary trick of managing to find that needle in a haystack to pop my brand new 'bomb-proof' tyres on the outskirts of the city, and so yet again the pair of us walked the last mile or so to the nearest bike shop to have team member's tyres coated in Kevlar, set in concrete, filled with jelly, ANYTHING TO STOP THEM POPPING. The diagnosis was simply that I am the 'unluckiest man in the world.' Bodes well for the desert.
From Grand Junction we headed 7 miles West to Fruita, a really friendly small town with a great campsite on the Colorado River. The next leg of the journey would take us to Moab (mo-ab) in Utah, 97 miles away with no reported services on route, so it was an easy decision to take day 40 as a rest in Fruita to prepare for this first foray into the desert.
The rest, as ever, was spent lazily pottering around town, eating, doing laundry and sleeping, but the long trip to come was always at the back of our minds. The alarm was set for 4am in an attempt to avoid the worst of the heat.

Hey guys loveing the beards, you've probably got very good reason for growing yours unlike me i'm just lazy. I'm really proud of your progress so far, it must feel like the end is in sight! Good to see your still finding time to drink a decent amount of beer. The video blog is great i laughed out loud in a very quite libery! Now i'm going to bore you guy's with some of my stories because i have locked myself out of the flat for the next 5 hours, wearing very little (T-shirt, shorts, flip flops, no undies) and it's raining outside!!!!! I hope hanna finishes work early.
Anyway had a great time in sydney a couple of weeks ago, caught up with gluthy, and some other friends, and took lots of pictures of the opera house (day, early evening and night) it looks different at these times honest!
Testerday we finished the league round of games 2nd so have a home semi next week. Only 2 games left then i'm off in search of that bungie jump i promised, hope the don't have a weight restriction.
The week just passed, on tuesday started concreteing a cow shed yard hard work but finished by 1 o'clock, out came the beers and the bottles of rum, and by the time i made training at 7 (half hour late) i was in a bit of a mess got laughed at alot falling all over the place, the lads are still talking about it today, they said it was the funniest thing they had ever seen at training. The next day i went out fishing on diver dans boat, i had an impressive catch about 7 snapper the heaviest 6.7kg's 1 harpucker which was big about 20kg's, oh and we drank more beer. Anyway I hope those ball's will still be able to harvest children, looking forward to hearing all the stories on your arrival home, keep on peddling Matt and Hanna
Just thought we would send you a message in an attempt to motivate you a bit when you may have a low day! We're thoroughly impressed with your efforts so far. Keep up the amazing work and enjoy it as much as you can! Hope the heat isn't affecting you too much, just be thankful your route didn't take you anywhere near our corner of the world, as it is stupidly hot now! Anyway Keep it up guys and best of luck for the rest of the journey! Take Care x
Dan and Joe, glad to hear of your latest days in the good ole usa!
I should not worry about you getting enough food! And it does sound like you are resting. Your 4th of July sounded wonderfully American. Happy for you to have experienced this.
Sorry you are in the barren lands! I myself love the green hills of Kentucky.

Gentlemen!
I can think of no finer way to spend my Saturday afternoon than by cursing myself for not having paid attention to your adventure thus far, and by then setting about making amends through a marathon blog-reading session.
Having chuckled my way through your pattie counts, cringed at the various hill-billy encounters, and felt positively heart-warmed by the stories of no-doubt welcome generosity (and free beer) at the hands of the good people of the fly-over states, I thought a quick note to say hi would be in order.
There are a few undeniable truths that have dawned on me, since embarking on my own sofa-based vicarious odyssey across the States: 1) If I ever again hear ‘Keep the Car Running’ I will lash out violently at whoever is nearest; 2) I am so disgustingly jealous of your trans-continental journey; 3) 12 hour days in the office suddenly seem that little bit less appealing!; 4) you chaps are veritable heroes!
Payday on Friday – I will be sure to drop a few dollars in the virtual money pot you’re putting together!
The rest of the boys in the house – Olly, Neeps and Ally – send their love and best wishes.
I look forward to reading your entries, and following your progress toward the home straight (with a little more frequency!). Take it easy boys.
Muchous love,
Mups
